FLS – Foreign Language Spanish

Spanish I is an introductory course designed for students with little to no prior experience in the Spanish language. Through a combination of interactive lessons, speaking exercises, and cultural exploration, students will develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Emphasis will be placed on fundamental grammar structures, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and basic conversational skills. By the end of the course, students will be able to engage in simple conversations, comprehend basic written texts, and demonstrate an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Spanish II builds upon the foundations established in Spanish I, further developing students’ language proficiency and cultural understanding. This course focuses on expanding vocabulary, mastering more complex grammatical structures, and enhancing communication skills in both spoken and written Spanish. Students will engage in more extensive reading and listening activities, participate in discussions on various topics, and complete writing assignments ranging from simple narratives to structured essays. Cultural exploration remains an integral component, allowing students to deepen their appreciation and understanding of Spanish-speaking societies around the world.

Spanish III is an intermediate-level course designed to refine and strengthen students’ language skills in Spanish. Building upon the proficiency gained in Spanish II, this course emphasizes increased fluency in spoken and written communication, as well as a deeper understanding of grammatical concepts and linguistic nuances. Students will engage in authentic materials such as literature, films, and news articles to further develop their reading and listening comprehension skills. Through structured conversations, debates, and presentations, students will enhance their ability to express opinions, convey ideas, and engage in more complex interactions in Spanish. Cultural exploration continues to be an integral part of the curriculum, allowing students to gain insight into the diversity and richness of Spanish-speaking cultures.

Spanish IV is an advanced-level course designed to provide students with the opportunity to achieve a high level of proficiency in Spanish language and culture. This course focuses on refining linguistic skills to near-native levels, with an emphasis on advanced grammar, syntax, and vocabulary usage. Students will engage in extensive reading and analysis of literary works from various Spanish-speaking regions, allowing them to deepen their understanding of literary themes, styles, and cultural contexts. Advanced speaking and writing assignments will challenge students to express themselves with precision and sophistication, both in formal and informal registers. Cultural exploration remains a central component, encouraging students to critically analyze and appreciate the cultural contributions of Spanish-speaking societies. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for advanced study in Spanish or for real-world applications of their language skills in academic, professional, or personal contexts.
