Turning a Love of Wellness into a Career

“Going back to Belmont College taught me something I didn’t know I needed to learn: I was capable of more than I had imagined.” – Hope Mercer

Hope Mercer, Massage Therapy Certificate Graduate, 2026

When I returned to college at age 49, I wanted to build on a passion I already had: helping people feel better in their bodies.

Already a yoga teacher and Thai yoga bodywork practitioner, I wanted to deepen my understanding of anatomy, kinesiology, and how the body works as a whole. I wanted to better understand what a client was telling me and connect those concerns to what might be happening in their body.

Belmont College’s Massage Therapy program gave me the education and clinical experience to build on that foundation. Working with clinical clients helped me develop confidence in my skills and prepared me for the next step: opening my own massage therapy practice in Cambridge, Ohio, after graduating and passing the MBLEx.

Today, I provide massage through my studio, Iron Zen Yoga & Wellness. My approach is centered on meeting each client where they are and providing what they need in that moment—whether that means relaxation, relief from an injury, scar tissue management or simply an opportunity to prioritize themselves.

There is a vulnerability that comes with having someone on a massage table. They are allowing you the privilege to work with them. There are no expectations of them when they show up. I really love that.

My own breast cancer experience also sparked an interest in scar management. After surgery, I recognized how little support was available locally for people navigating the physical changes that can continue long after treatment ends. I pursued additional education so I could offer that support to others in my community.

For me, learning doesn’t stop with a diploma. I consider myself a “forever student” and continue to explore new techniques and areas of bodywork, including Ashiatsu and other specialized training. I hope to eventually share that knowledge by teaching other therapists as well.

Going back to Belmont College taught me something I didn’t know I needed to learn: I was capable of more than I had imagined.

I am so incredibly capable – capable of tackling the big things, managing my time and building a new career for myself. There are so many avenues I could explore with massage.

And for anyone who thinks it might be too late to start something new, I have a simple answer: Do it. You’re never too old to learn.
