“I’ve lived with an immune disorder most of my 24 years, so blood tests, and IV’s have been the routine. It’s not fun, but my phlebotomists have made it a lot easier. So, when I heard about the Phlebotomy program at Belmont, I knew that was my new career path.

After graduating from high school, my heart was set on teaching young minds. That’s what drove me to consider an associate degree in early childhood education. But once I actually started teaching, I decided my heart wasn’t there anymore. For months I wasn’t sure what I really wanted to do. Then my aunt mentioned that Belmont College offered a certificate program in phlebotomy. And based on my experience at Belmont—all the instructors and staff members are so kind and made me feel like family—I just had to go back.
My instructors were amazing. Their hands-on, fun approach not only made me understand every little detail, but it also made me fall more in love with phlebotomy.
And it’s helped me tremendously as I start my career. Before I finished my studies, I was already working at WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital. They were so impressed with how prepared I was. I take patients’ blood and handle specimens. Seeing people smile or say ‘I didn’t even feel that’ makes me feel so good.
I earned my phlebotomy certification in December, and I’ll graduate in May. My plan is to continue my education and become a registered nurse. My advice is to never let your fear hold you back. Follow your heart. Because no what age you are, you can go back to school and pursue your dream.”
