Breaking Barriers and Building a Future

As a woman entering the HVAC industry, Marissa has faced challenges, particularly with the perception that skilled trades are “not for women.” Rather than being discouraged, she has used those experiences as fuel to break through the stigma and lead by example.

Marissa, a second-year HVAC student at Belmont College from Barnesville, OH, is the definition of dedication and resilience. A full-time mother to a 6-year-old daughter, a wife of nearly eight years, and a hardworking student balancing two jobs, Marissa is pursuing her education full time—all while redefining what it means to succeed in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Originally enrolled in Belmont’s Medical Assisting program, Marissa made a pivotal career change in the summer of 2024, realizing that her true passion might be elsewhere. She found that passion in HVAC, a hands-on and high-demand trade that immediately sparked her interest.

“My goal is to secure a rewarding position in the HVAC field after graduation—one that will allow me to support my family and show others that gender should never be a barrier to success.”

Marissa hopes her story encourages other women to explore careers in skilled trades. Her advice to anyone considering a non-traditional path: “Just go for it.” She is proud to have chosen Belmont College as the foundation for her future and grateful for the support that has helped her thrive in a career she truly loves.
