Under the leadership of Governor DeWine and the Ohio Legislature, Ohio established the Governor’s Merit Scholarship program, funded at $20 million for the first year of the program. The objectives of the GMS are to:

  • Reduce financial barriers preventing Ohio’s top high school graduates from pursuing higher education;
  • Recognize the impressive scholastic achievement of Ohio’s top graduates; and
  • Incentivize Ohio’s high achieving high school students to attend an institution of higher education in Ohio.

According to McGary, “This scholarship provided me the opportunity to earn my degree without the weight of a large amount of college debt. It has truly been a reminder that hard work pays off and I am entirely grateful to be one of the first few to receive this award!”

In order to be eligible, a student must be a resident of the State of Ohio and be enrolled in a public or chartered non-public high school. Additionally, they must be determined to be in the top 5% of their class. The student must graduate from high school on time (within one year of the point of eligibility determination) and enroll at a qualifying institution of higher education, as specified by law.
