A medical coder is an integral member of a healthcare team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for translating medical information into standardized codes to document patient records and support accurate reimbursement.
In this one-year, fully online program, you’ll develop a comprehensive understanding of medical coding as a data collection tool. You will also gain an in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology, as well as master the principles of medical coding that are critical to healthcare services reimbursement.
Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be able to apply your skills to proper CPT-4 and ICD-10 coding across a variety of healthcare settings and will be eligible to sit for the Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) certification exam, offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

What you’ll learn
- Gain entry-level coding skills with ICD-10-CM and CPT-4.
- Be able to describe the relationship between coding and reimbursement in health care, including how to complete the CMS-1500 billing form.
- Develop appropriate billing and coding skills, such as using medical office simulation software and how to manage the front office.
- Display professional workplace behaviors including patient confidentiality and professional ethics.
- Demonstrate clear and effective verbal and written communication skills, critical thinking, problem solving, and accountability measures within their scope of practice.
- Understand the United States Health Insurance Privacy and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
