Fire Safety Inspector & Hazard Recognition Officer
Continuing education courses are offered to assist local volunteer firefighters in obtaining Fire Safety Inspector & Hazard Recognition Officer State certifications. Professional Development courses are available for students who need continuing education hours to maintain firefighter certification.
Courses
This 80-hour, non-credit course will train you to conduct fire and life safety inspections and issue citations. The Fire Safety Inspector course covers the content needed to meet the performance requirements defined in NFPA 1031, including code interpretation, review, and analysis of fire protective systems, and testifying at legal proceedings. To enroll, you should have a thorough understanding and knowledge of the characteristics and behavior of fire, fire prevention, oral and written communications, and basic mathematics. Once you successfully complete the program, you’ll be eligible to take the state certification exam.
Entrance requirements
- Complete a Belmont College application
- Must be 18 years of age
- Submit high school transcripts to Register’s Office
- Entrance criteria/exam demonstrating cognitive proficiency
- Submit a copy of driver’s license
- Attend a Firefighter Orientation/Interest Meeting or meet with program coordinator
- Submit copy of Ohio Firefighter certification (not verification printout)
- Submit and sign all program waivers
- Be employed by one of the following agencies:
- The Office of the State Fire Marshal
- A firefighting agency as defined in division (A)(3) of section 9.60 of the R.C.
- A private fire company as defined in division (A)(5) of section 9.60 of the R.C. providing fire protection in accordance with division (B), (C), or (D) of section 9.60 of the R.C
Completion requirements
- Complete at least 80 hours of training
- Complete course assignments with a passing score of at least 73%
- Meet 100% of course attendance/make-up criteria
- Complete the final exam with a score of at least 70%
- Complete the ‘Fire Safety Inspector Course Objectives’
Certification requirements
- Pass the practical skills examination within 180 days of course completion
- Pass the written certification (knowledge) examination (score of at least 70%) within 180 days of course completion
- Submit a completed application within 90 days of passing the knowledge exam (generally this is an electronic process that occurs at the end of the written exam)
- Meet criteria for certification as specified by the Ohio Division of EMS, Office of Fire Services
In this 40-hour, non-credit course, you’ll learn to conduct fire and life safety inspections without the authority to write citations. The Hazard Recognition Officer course covers the content needed to meet the performance requirements defined in NFPA 1031, including the role of the HRO in code enforcement, fand ire prevention practices. To enroll, you should have a thorough understanding and knowledge of the characteristics and behavior of fire, fire prevention, and oral and written communications, and be prepared to work in conjunction with fire safety inspectors. Successful students are eligible to take the state certification exam.

- Complete at least 40 hours of training
- Complete course assignments with a passing score of at least 73%
- Meet 100% of course attendance/make-up criteria
- Complete the final exam with a score of at least 70%
- Complete the ‘Hazard Recognition Officer Course Objectives’
